Guardianship

The Guardianship Program helps persons declared by the probate Court to be incapacitated due to a mental illness and/or a developmental disability (e.g., John Doe, an Incapacitated Person). As Guardian, Adult Well-Being Services (AWBS) acts in a fiduciary capacity with respect to the incapacitated person or "ward" and is responsible for the ward's care, comfort, maintenance, education and medical care.

The Guardianship Workers assist the wards by applying to the Department of Human Services for Medicaid and Food Stamps; applying to the Social Security Administration for SSI, RSDI and Medicare Benefits; coordinating medical and mental health services; and, working with the ward, case manager, supports coordinator and others to resolve complex problems relating to the provision of services.
